The Day When My LIFE Started to CHANGE for Good
The 3rd November 2013 – Five years ago.
I will never forget this day. It was THE day.
To this day I’ve lived in Germany my whole life. I was born in East Germany in March 1981. I grew up under a communist regime. I played in a separated system under strict rules. I was free in my own little world and caught in the bigger system.
When I was eight the wall broke down. I spent my teenage years in an era of change. ‘East’ and ‘West’ Germany now united as one country. But this is not the story I want to share with you today.
Fast forward….to July 2005. My son was born. Roots in Germany and in Zimbabwe. Europe and Africa united in one person.
Why November 3rd, 2013 was the day when my life started to change for good?
This was the day when I entered the African atmosphere for the first time in my life.
This was the day when my feet touched African soil for the first time.
This was the day when I was shocked because it was slightly drizzling in Harare. Where was the sun? I thought we will be received with sunshine.
This was the day when my son and I were picked up at the airport in Harare by people I had never met in my life before.
This was the day when we seemingly drove hours and hours from the airport in Harare to a place beyond a small village called Macheke where we would live for the next ten months.
This was the day when I started to fell in love with Zimbabwe for good.
This was the beginning of a deep relationship between Africa and me.
This day and all the days, weeks, months, years to come would forever be different because I no longer was just a child grown up in East Germany.
